Description

I was lucky to notice this guy late one night. Mantises are not particularly skittish, so I got some good shots. I ran into him the next day and will post a full sun shot in the future. The markings in the armpit are normal for a mantis.
(edit: I removed the over-saturation for a more natural look, though it's still "flash burned" see link below)

Nikon D200,
Nikkor 70-210 +1.5 magnifier
135mm focal length
iso 400
f/11

Nice sharpness and saturated colors.
The black background is perfect.

Wish the antenna was all in.

Agree with Patrick too, and I have some doubt about some greenish saturation.
Anyway great capture!

Agree with Moser about the antena, i like the colors and black background maybe a less strong flash would be great, well done...!!!

Great sharpness. I dont mind the antennas, dont feel I am missing much there.

The flash is harsh and obvious. Need to control carefully the amount of light. :)

Nice capture and details....I like the black background...but it looks a little artifitial,....maybe a slight variations of intensity would help.

Carlos

Interesting suggestion. I could easily add a background to this, though it would then be a photo manip. A star field would be most appropriate, seeing as it's a night shot.

I suppose I could also fill in the white areas to reduce the flashyness of it.

@Penraeth: I don't think Carlos is suggesting a change of background but a more natural saturation. The colors are very intensive almosed pushed much due to the way you fire of the flash. This can be controlled using a bouncer and other settings for the camera+flash (depends on equipment of course).

Good luck! :)

No offense taken Carlos. I wasn't actually being sarcastic. As Patrick pointed out, I think I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you referred to the pure black background. The yellow is what I now think you were talking about and, indeed, it's over the top. I'm actually serious about putting a star field behind it. (maybe that's corny).

I've updated this without the heavy saturation. My hope was that I could compensate for the "flash burn" with color, but I really wasn't sure about it. Sorry for the subpar image. I just like mantises.

Patrick, you're right. I only have the built in flash and hate using it.

Thanks for the input everyone
